About Yule Duel

Yule Duel is BC’s largest free, family friendly, outdoor choral event. At Yule Duel dozens of choirs sing for a crowd of thousands in a street-carolling competition, as they compete for a multitude of awards decided by our judges (see below).  All proceeds from this fund-raising event support May’s Place Hospice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  At Yule Duel you also get the chance to vote for your favourite choir. For each donation of $5.00 you can buy a button to vote for a choir to make it to the People’s Choice dueling final, where you get to decide the winner.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What can I expect? Expect to see lots of choirs singing on the plaza from about 6:00-6:45 pm, plus an event main stage that will host our event finale from about 7:00-8:30pm. You may want to watch one choir the entire time, or listen to one choir for a few minutes, then move on to other choirs. The judges will also be circulating, adjudicating in two categories: Most Creative Performance and Best Vocal Performance.

2. How can spectators support choirs? This is a fund-raising event, with all proceeds supporting May’s Place Hospice in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.  Choirs raise funds for this cause through donations to their choir.  You can also support Yule Duel by purchasing a $5 button during the event to vote for your favourite choir.  You can also support your favourite choir by donating directly to them on the Choirs page, or on event night via each choir’s custom url that will be displayed onsite during the event.

3. What happens after carolling? At 6:45 pm, the Carnival Band will lead a procession towards the Main Stage. Choirs will finish singing and follow them! Marcus Mosely will sing a few holiday tunes for everyone. Then our MC will announce the finalists in our categories and invite them to the main stage for their duel.

4. What if it rains? Yule Duel is an outdoor event, rain or shine. The event begins at 5:30 pm and should wrap up around 8:30pm. Be sure to prepare for the weather. You’ll be outside the entire time, so we recommend bringing an umbrella if the weather is wet. It will be handy when you’re walking around the event site and waiting for action on the Main Stage. Dress warmly.

5. What should I bring? Your camera and smartphone – be sure to tag all pictures with #yuleduel2019.  Bring very little except what you can wear / carry on your person. There is no designated area to securely store belongings. We suggest you bring cash if you want to purchase a button and ballot to vote for your favourite choir, although some credit card processing will be available.

Transit and Parking

Spectators are strongly encouraged to take public transit. The closest transit stations to the event site are Canada Line City Centre, Granville Skytrain Station and Burrard Station. Many buses run into the downtown core, close to the event.  Check Translink for information.
