Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if it rains? Yule Duel is an outdoor event, rain or shine. The event begins at 6pm and should wrap up around 8:30pm. Be sure to prepare for the weather. Each choir will be performing under a tent, but we recommend bringing an umbrella if the weather is wet. It will be handy when you’re walking around the event site and waiting for action on the Main Stage. Dress warmly. You’ll be outside the entire time.

2. What should I wear? Dress warmly and for the weather. You will be outside the entire time.

3. What should I bring? Your camera and smartphone – be sure to tag all pictures with #yuleduel2017.  Bring very little except what you can wear / carry on your person. There is no designated area to securely store belongings. Be sure to bring cash if you want to purchase a button and ballot to vote for your favourite choir (see item #4 below).

3. What can I expect? Expect to see over 20 choirs singing along Water and nearby streets from about 6:30-7:15pm, plus an event main stage that will host our event finale from about 7:30-8:30pm. You may want to watch one choir the entire time, or listen to one choir for a few minutes, then move on to other choirs. Two groups of judges will also be circulating, adjudicating in two categories: Most Creative Performance and Best Vocal Performance.

4. How can spectators can support choirs? Spectators can purchase a Yule Duel button for $5 from button sellers throughout the event site – all proceeds go to May’s Place, a hospice in the Downtown Eastside. Spectators who buy a button get a ballot – they should fill out the ballot and return it to the voting booths at the northwest corner of Carrall and Water Streets. The two choirs with the most votes will duel later for the People’s Choice Award. Supporters can also donate in support of any choir online before the event, through your choir page on yuleduel.com. The choir that raises the most money as of 11:59pm on Wed Dec 6 will win the Top Fundraising Choir Award.

5. What happens after carolling? At 7:15pm, the Carnival Band will lead a procession towards the Main Stage. Choirs will finish singing and follow them! Marcus Mosely will sing a few holiday tunes for everyone. Then MCs Christopher Gaze and Samantha Falk will announce the finalists in our categories and invite them to the main stage for their duel.
